Sheng 笙 series - Yu 竽 - Ancient Large Sheng Variant

Yu is a large sheng variant that was very popular during the Zhou, Qin and Han Dynasty.
It was used as a solo, accompaniment or ensemble instrument.

Sometimes the yu is categorized as a separate instrument, but in most sources it is considered a sheng variant.

The similarity of the yu and sheng has led to confusion in classification or construction on several occasions.

The Yu disappeared around the Song Dynasty period.
Joseph-Marie Amiot describes a Sheng he sent to Europe in 1779 as a former Yu.
(According to Amiot, Yu is the ancient name for the large Sheng)

This is a large sheng with 24 pipes that was probably the first sheng and free reed instrument in Europe and may have been the impetus for future instruments such as the harmonica, accordion, concertina, harmonium, and American reed organs such as the melodeon.

Stay tuned to the Sheng series and learn how the Sheng led to new instruments in Europe and America.
