Joseph Marie Amiot was a French Jesuit who was sent on a mission to China in the 18th century, where he remained until his death.
He was one of the first Europeans to have serious scientific insights into Chinese music culture.
His description of the Sheng in Mémoire sur la musique des Chinois, tant anciens que modernes
is probably the most accurate and detailed that existed in Europe up to that time.
Amiot recognized the unique Free Reed technique, which was still unknown in Europe at the time.
In his book, first published in Europe in 1779 and 1780, there are descriptions of 4 Sheng variants, with their tunings, pipe lengths, and arrangements.
I have tried to reproduce these 4 variants (24,19,19,13) as 3 D models as they are described.
For the calculation of the indicated lengths I have used the French unit of measurement that was current at the time of Amiot until the French Revolution.
