The Chinese Sheng became known in Europe between 1770 and 1780.
After that, this instrument was also found in almost all European music books.
However, many editors of these books never saw a sheng in real life, so they usually included copies of the pictures and texts in their works.
The exact mechanism of the free reed technique of the sheng was unknown to many.
Chinese mouth organ instruments appeared in European musical literature as early as before 1780, but were probably not correctly represented due to lack of information. (Tam Kim by Filippo Bonanni, Bellows sheng by Francesco Bianchini, Espece de Trompette Chinois by de La Borde).
