Gagaku on a boat - 船上の雅楽 (The Tale of Genji boat stages - 源氏物語 ボートステージ)

Gagaku boat stages.

In my research on Gagaku I have seen these boats on old scrolls or emakis.

You can still see them at special festivals, annual events or religious customs such as Kasuga Taischa Shrine in Nara.
Sometimes historical events are re-enacted on a pond with many such decorated boats.

Artists inspired by The Tale of Genji have painted these boats mostly on ponds, on ponds that were in the manor houses.
The boats are usually used for music and dancing, and sometimes they are used to cross to small islands located in the ponds.

Very often instruments used in Gagaku and dancers in costumes used in Bugaku can be seen on the boats.
You can also find these boats on emakis and scroll of the Eiga Monogatari.

I made 3 boat versions and 2 typical headfigures:

Single boat with small long stage covered.
Double boat with a large stage.
Ferries and stage boat.

雅楽の研究をしていると、古い掛け軸や絵巻物にこの舟が描かれていました。
今でも奈良の春日大社など、特別なお祭りや年中行事、宗教的な習慣で見ることができます。

このような装飾が施された船がたくさんある池では、歴史的な出来事が再現されることもあります。
源氏物語に影響を受けた画家たちは、たいていこの舟を、荘園の中にある池の上に描いています。

舟は通常、音楽や踊りに使われ、時には池の中の小さな島に渡ることもあります。
雅楽で使われる楽器や、舞楽で使われる衣装を着た踊り手が船に乗っていることがよくあります。

また、これらの船は絵巻物や映画物語の巻物にも掲載されています。
私は3つのボートバージョンと2つの典型的なヘッドフィギュアを作りました。

小さなロングステージをカバーしたシングルボート。
大きなステージを持つダブルボート。
フェリーやステージボート。
